Doggy Style: Rainy Day

Atlas HATES water. Whether he's being bathed or forced to do his business while it's raining, he despises it. However, he loves wearing little outfits! Whenever his raincoat appears, he jumps up on his hind legs and bounces around till I secure him in it. Before the coat, taking him out in the rain meant having to draaaaaag him outside. While the raincoat makes him less of a princess about going for walks in the rain, he'd still rather be cozy and warm enjoying it inside. I agree!

Two pink and leopard outfits two days in a row! I am loving this color combo; it's a nice alternative to pairing animal print with dark colors. It's too sunny to not wear some light, springy hues! Or at least until some time later this week, when it's supposed to snow.

Not complaining! I am a winter weather girl, through and through. My dream life would be living in a cabin in the snowy woods on a lake somewhere. One last snow of the season? Yes, please!

Ladies, can we discuss hair?

I know many of you are able to go days without washing your hair, and swear by this method. My locks go from clean to greaseball in about 12 hours. It's disgusting - ALL of me feels dirty when my hair is. It's so oily I don't even use conditioner but a few times a month. I'm beyond jealous of those who can skip a few days between washes!

I didn't wash mine for a day and a half (it was all I could take!), and my hair felt AMAZING after being washed today! So bouncy and full of life! I want to keep this up, but the in-between days are too much for me. Dry shampoo doesn't do much on this mop. Do you have any tips? Or are you a rinse n' repeat every day kinda gal?

PS - My move to Wordpress is going to take a few more days, but it'll be worth the wait! :)

I have Ashley to thank for this outfit! She suggested I pair this tunic with white - a skirt, shorts or tank. I layered a white tank under and belted it, but (lamely) you can't see it in these photos. Trust, my friends - the magic is under there. I tend to wear all of my animal prints with black or red, so white was a fun new twist!

What are your go-to colors to mix with animal prints? Please share!!!!

I'm in a bit of a style rut. I've had zero inspiration lately, and it's lead me to reach for denim day in and day out. There's nothing wrong with that, but I feel I need a little challenge to pull myself out of this sartorial funk.

I'm quite new to animal prints. Since I've learned to love them, it's been hard to hold back buying anything and everything with them on it! Only thing is, they aren't super simple to wear. You've got to OWN an animal print. So often they sit in my closet for "someday when I have time to think about wearing that".

Above are all the cat-print items I own. I'm embarking on a mini-challenge to wear them all over the next week! There aren't any rules or strict guidelines other than to incorporate these items into my outfit over the next few posts.

Any suggestions on how I should wear any of these garments? Specifically the tunic! I'm not so sure how to rock that one, yet....

Now that my life has me doing something different every day, I'm starting to include a "why" in my posts (see above), so you know what occasion my outfit was donned for. My PT job at the vintage shop doesn't require me to wear vintage clothes, but I definitely try to make sure I've got a few pieces on when I'm working there. This blouse and skirt are two of my most favorite vintage pieces, so wearing them together was a no-brainer!

Introducing: Howdy, Partner!

I'm so excited to share a new venture I've been working on! Introducing Howdy, Partner! Handmade Necklaces, made by yours truly. This was all spawned from a serendipitous trip to the craft store, where I basically started tossing stuff I loved into my cart, and later fiddling around with my findings at home.

The response has been great so far! Howdy, Partner necklaces are already lined up for a few wholesale orders, and will soon be available on consignment in brick and mortar stores in several states! (WHAT?!!)

Tiny corked glass jars teeming with sparkly glitter on a gold plated or brass chain. I wear mine ALL THE TIME! (In fact, I was wearing it here.)

These tiny horses are strung up on brass chains and available in varied colors, with customizable lengths - long, short.....whatever you fancy! But your options aren't limited to horses. There are dogs, deer, wolves, and much, much more! The shop is being updated several times a week, so check back often for new items.

Spring Ain't Sprung

Confession: Getting dressed is proving hard while working from home. Last week I didn't post a lot because......uhhhh, I didn't get dressed often. Comfy pants won over wearin' something pretty - and my run in with the creepster didn't help my lack of blogging motivation! This week, I'm trying to get on a schedule so I don't get into the bad habit of showering at 6pm.

Spring probably won't show its face in Chicago until May or so (don't get your hopes up Chi-town...just because it's spring elsewhere doesn't mean it'll happen here!). That won't stop me from channeling a little it of the season change in my outfit! I layered one of my favorite vintage slips with just a touch of lace peeking out at the hem.

Last week was my first doing vintage full time. To be honest, I was exceptionally easy on myself and just tried to enjoy a less strict schedule, and being at home more. Truth: not waking up to an alarm at 6am is insanely delightful!

The day after I gave notice at my old job, I received an offer from a part-time job I had my fingers and toes crossed I'd get.....at a vintage shop! So I'm working there a few days a week and working on my shop the rest of the time. I can't even tell you guys how incredibly wonderful it's been! None of this feels like work because I love so much! Everything is all rainbows and unicorns right now, but I'm sure there are many highs and lows ahead. Until then, I can't tell you how happy I am I made this change and followed my heart!

I had quite a snafu yesterday when I ventured out to the alley to take my outfit photos. As I was setting up my tripod and getting situated, I noticed a man watching me from a few yards away. I've seen this guy around; he lives in the neighborhood and paces up and down the alley several times a day. Weird, but hey....I take pictures of myself out there, so who am I to judge?

I decided to brave his watchful eye and tend to my business. As I stood up to arrange myself and jump in front of the camera, his look snapped from observant to penetrating, and he started walking towards me. Panicked, I grabbed my camera and booked it into the house. Thinking he would just go away if I waited it out, I shut the door and told myself I was being dramatic. Then, I heard shuffling on the other side of the door. The effing creep followed me!

Moral of the story, fellow bloggers - please be careful if you're alone taking your photos! Mark bought me some mace that hooks onto my keychain a few years ago, so it's always with me at the ready. Better safe than sorry!

High Horse

It dawned on me when I sat down to write this post that this is probably my favorite outfit....ever. A compilation of many elements I adore, all in one:

1. Animal print. My obsession with it is not new to you long time readers! Anything with a repeating animal print on it I HAVE to have.

2. Volume. I like my skirts and hair FULL. I've worn this dress several times on the blog, but since I was in Texas and headed to a party with fashion bloggers, the crinoline added a little extra oomph and femininity one can't always get away with. Everything's bigger in Texas, right?

3. Cognac leather. It sets my heart aflame!

4. Boots. They are my favorite - a sartorial security blanket, if you will. They perfectly complete almost everything in my closet, and always give me an added boost of confidence. No matter how many pairs I own, it's never enough! I almost threw on my cowboy boots, but Emily reminded me I wasn't wearing a....

5. Costume. What can I say? I love a little bit of costume in my get-ups. As a lover and seller of vintage, it couldn't be any other way, now could it? The key is knowing when to reign it in (I'm still learning).

Lesson learned: It helps to have a rock star photographer take your photos! Merl offered words of encouragement and posing advice. My lazy tripod never offers much but silent judgement!

Deep in the Heart . . . .

Be prepared: major photo dump ahead!

The day before hitting the road to the Texas Style Conference, Merl and Emily spent the night at my place. We ordered pizza, drank some wine and prepared ourselves for a two day drive from Chicago to Austin. I'd never met Merl before, but we (luckily) instantly hit it off. A 20+ hour drive in the car with someone you don't get along with or feel any kind of kinship with would be brutal. The night quickly lead to good conversation and instant friendship.

We spent the first day driving to Amanda's in Arkansas. She let three tired but excited girls run loose to do some shopping in her brick and mortar vintage shop!

We spent the evening at Amanda's imbibing and having the best time. I laughed so hard I cried - several times (the same is true of the entire weekend). She has an amazing home and beautiful family. I kind of want her life.....in a non-Single White Female kind of way.

The next morning we were up and at 'em before dawn for the second day in a row, this time with Amanda in tow.

After our long drive, we arrived too late and missed the swapping action. However, we made it in time to meet up with all of our internet friends, who, in a matter of minutes, felt like old friends.

Rachael ran up and gave me the biggest hug ever the second we walked into the swap space. We've read each others blogs and emailed many times, but in person, she is truly a gorgeous, hilarious, smart woman. Her welcome was indicative of the sentiment I felt the entire weekend - warm, happy and despite having met few of these women in person before - familiar.

Saturday we did some shopping - a quick excursion for cowboy boots and a thrift stop. Not the best haul, but there were HATS.

I wanted one thing from Texas besides a good time: cowboy boots. Success!

I'm not going to lie - Kendi and Jentine are two of the most tall and beautiful ladies I've ever laid eyes on. (They both purchased items from my pop up shop, so that may have persuaded me to say nice things about them on the internet.) Kendi is a genuine, kind soul I'm so happy to have met. Her husband Bryan is also about the nicest guy ever - I chatted with him about blogging, Chicago, and near-identical furbabies. He and Kendi will be shooting my future wedding, FYI.

While I wasn't well acquanited with Jentine before last weekend, I'm glad I got to experience her sass in the flesh.

I was thrilled to meet Tanvi in person! She's absolutely delightful, as is her husband! Here she is sportin' some swank Clyde's Rebirth. So sad we didn't get a photo together!

All in all, it was a positively overwhelming weekend. I drank too much, slept too little, made many new friends and had FUN. Lots of it. My life is changing incredibly, and this trip gave me the affirmation I needed about its new direction. It wasn't something I was searching for, but it found me none the less. I feel incredibly lucky to have spent time with some really lovely people I can now call friends.

I come from a family of road trippers. In 1972, my parents bought a light blue Ford van that my dad outfitted with a table and fold-up beds in the back; for years, they would spend months at a time camping in that van, driving all over the western US. (They kept the van for over 25 years, although I don’t think it ran once during the last seven – by then it was my own personal ‘spaceship’ in the back of the driveway.) Even after the van-age ended, we never flew for family vacations. Every summer, it was simply a question of whether we’d be driving from Virginia north to Maine or south to the Carolinas and beyond. Since leaving home, I’ve kept the tradition alive, driving from Virginia to Florida, Boston to Toronto, New Jersey to Maine and all back again, in some cases many times over.

Yet despite having lots of great trip memories to choose from, when Lisa first asked me to guest post for her while she’s off on her (enviable) road trip to Texas, I immediately knew I would be writing about my own, not-so-enviable road trip to Texas almost two decades ago. While I can’t exactly call this trip a favorite, it’s by far my most vividly and viscerally remembered.

The summer before I turned nine, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her doctors in Fort Worth recommended an immediate mastectomy, and while her two sons lived far away on opposite coasts, everyone felt it was important for her to have some family around while recovering from her surgery.

So we drove.

We drove for three straight days, from our inside-the-beltway northern Virginia house to my grandmother’s single-story in Forth Worth, Texas. The air conditioning broke on the afternoon of the first day. We did not stop.

We had a big cardboard box full of (vintage, I’m sure) Nancy Drew books that had been handed down to me by my older cousin, and I lay down in the backseat and read the entire way. We’d stop for gas or food every few hours, and I’d grab three more unread Nancy Drews from the trunk and toss in the ones I’d finished. I knew cancer was serious stuff, but I really had no idea what to expect when we got to my grandmother’s – would she be bedridden? Bald? Was she going to die? – so I immersed myself in conquering my box of books, only pausing to ask if we could stop the car when we got to the banks of the Mississippi.

I had read Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, and associated a great deal of romanticism with Mississippi river mud. When we got the river, my dad pulled off the highway and found a place where we could walk all the way down to the water. In the heat of mid-summer, the river was low and deep brown, and the banks had grown into endless mud flats, littered with discarded toilets and other flotsam. My mother gamely picked her way through the mess with me, so that I could sink my toes into the mud of the American ur-river. I did; it was squishy; I was surprised not to have any epiphanies. We headed back to the car and drove on.

When we finally got to Fort Worth and went to see my grandmother in the hospital, I was surprised and relieved to find her neither bedridden, nor bald, nor in immediate risk of death. On the contrary, she was lively and cheerful, simply a little more asymmetrical than she’d always been. A lifelong religious zealot (she’d grown up believing dancing to be sinful), she shocked me by whipping down the front of her hospital gown in front of the entire family to show us her surgery site. After days of wondering what to expect, she completely demystified her illness to me in about three minutes; to this day she still happily shows off her prosthesis to anyone who’ll stop to chat.

That hot and endlessly long drive made quite an impression on me, although I now have no memory of our return journey. On our drive to Texas, I had read 23 Nancy Drew books. (Obviously, I wanted to be like George. Didn’t we all?) I had memorized every line of stitching in the blue velvet upholstery of our Nissan’s back seat. I had stood on the banks of the Mississippi and squished my illusions between my toes. I had consumed an ungodly number of McNuggets. While I still can’t quite look back on that trip fondly, it will always remain for me a marker of a particular moment in my childhood.

Guest Blogger Road Trip Series: Louise, Coffee and a Cardigan

To be honest, I don't travel much. But when I do, I take my trusty 1978 Honda Civic. I call her Doris, after Miss Doris Day, one of my favorite people. She was found in a Safeway parking lot with a cardboard price tag. With 47 miles to a gallon, Doris has paid us back her cost! She's a trusty old thing. I have to say that my favorite 'trip' were the many drives back from the river with my husband and daughter. We swam in the Santiam River at least three times a week, and the 30 minute drive back home in Doris was my favorite part of the day. The warm evening wind blowing through the car, cooling our sunburns... the shadows of the sunset on the passing farmland... the sensation in your tummy through the winding, dipping country roads.... Yeah, I loved that.

Hello fabulous readers of Archives!! While Lisa is off in Texas enjoying the warm weather and fabulous company, she's invited a few bloggers to help her post. She's asked me to write about a favorite road trip or vacation memory, and I'm happy to oblige!

It's funny, because I really don't have a single vacation or road trip memory that stands out as a favorite to me. I was an incredibly lucky child, and grew up galavanting around the globe with my family. I spent substantial amounts of my childhood in Europe, Japan, Brazil, and various parts of the U.S., and some of my most precious memories surround those trips. But those trips never felt like vacations, really. They were parts of life, things that we did regularly, and were as important to our family as any other routinized event. This is not to trivialize the importance of each trip, or to say that I wasn't aware of how unusual and lucky it was to be able to do those things, but they simply didn't fall into the category of "vacation" to me.

To me, and my family, vacations were the mini-road trips we took a few times each year to visit my grandparents. Both of my parents' mothers lived in the same city, which was incredibly lucky for us, and my sister and I used to spend a week or two each year at their homes. At least one trip would be over winter break, and another over the summer. The time we spent there was always fantastic, and relaxing. My sister and I would get spoiled silly; we'd get to go to the mall, and the candy store, and could watch as many cartoons as we wanted, and we'd get loads of wonderful quality time with our grandmothers. Those trips are times that I would never give up, and that hold so many precious memories to me.

The drive to my grandmothers' houses was about four hours. I remember every mile of that trip as if I had driven it just yesterday, even though it's been almost 10 years. I loved the drive, actually. The anticipation of getting to our vacation was more than enough to get through the 4 hour drive, and I fondly remember looking out the window as we drove down the road, transitioning from my day-to-day life into my week of grandmotherly fun.

I miss that drive more than I can say, not because of the trip itself, but because of where we were going. Getting to spend so much time with my grandmothers as a kid is something that I value incalculably. Those road trips, and those vacations, were part of what made my childhood so full of love and support, and I'm infinitely grateful that I was able to spend that time with my family.

I remember August 6th, 2007 like it was yesterday. At 2am in the morning, my husband (Matt) and I were preparing ourselves for our one way road trip that was moving us from Los Angeles, CA to Chicago, IL. We packed our Jeep Compass full of personal belongings, got our dogs settled in the back seat and started our journey. When we left that morning I knew that something on the other end was waiting for us, but what I didn't expect was an amazing trip that would show me so much of the country that I had never seen before.

The route we drove took us through 5 different states (Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa) not counting California and Illinois. I consider myself a well traveled person, but what I was going to see over the next 2 days of driving were going to open my eyes to so much more.

We hit the Nevada border a little after 5am and right as we drove through Las Vegas the sun was rising over the strip. I've been to Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe before, as well as Reno, but what lies beyond the casinos is truly breath taking. I remember the stretch right after the city limits all the way to the Utah border was this truly breath taking scene of desert that you only see in National Geographic. I thought that I had seen the most amazing scenery, but then came Utah.

It was as if the scenery automatically changed right after we crossed the border. Driving through the state I couldn't help but take endless pictures of the canyons and flats that surrounded us. I was in awe of everything around us and every shot I captured was truly picturesque. I was amazed that such untouched parts of the country existed and that this was the first time I was ever experiencing their existence. My eyes were wide open for the rest of the drive.

Once we hit Colorado it started raining. I was excited about driving through the state because I heard how beautiful it was and knew people who grew up in the Denver area. Unlike Utah, Colorado was so green. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest so I'm no stranger to nature, but Colorado was on a whole different level than what we’ve got going on in the Pac NW. Even with the rain pouring down the trees and mountains were so amazing to drive through. Until we hit Denver it was like we were driving through mountains – not around or over, but in between all of this amazing scenery. It almost felt like one of those virtual rides that you see at the mall, but this was real life experience for me. We stayed overnight in a city north of Denver and rested up to prepare for the remainder of our trip.

Again we got up at the crack of dawn so that we could make it to Chicago when it was still daylight. It was dark and a little dreary, but luckily I wasn’t missing out on anything. Once the sun started rising, I was starting to get a little tearful about leaving the west coast. I started seeing nothing but flat land. First it was wheat (Colorado), then it was farms (Nebraska) and lastly corn fields (Iowa). There was no sign of mountains or bodies of water. It was nothing like the first half of our trip. I watched old episodes of Friends on my portable DVD player until we hit the Illinois border and the only time I would look out the window was to find a sign that told us how far the next gas station was located.

Once we crossed the Illinois border I started soaking in what was to become of our new “home”. I had to fully understand that water towers are part of every suburb and that in some parts of the state it’s ok to have corn fields. I also started to realize that toll roads were the norm and that even though California has bad traffic, Illinois’ is probably worse. We were coming in from the Southwest side and as soon as I could see the tip of the Sears Tower I started to get really excited. My first trip to Chicago was only a few weeks before our move and although I was extremely hesitant (in fact – very resistant) about moving, I was excited about the change that was ahead of us. We drove closer to the city and as we approached city limits I was bombarded with a rush of unexplainable emotion. The city was beautiful and something had come over me. It was that burst of emotion that calmed my anxiousness and reassured me that everything would be ok.

That road trip to this day is one of my fondest memories. Having travelled to several countries and cities, I can honestly say that sometimes, the most impactful trips are ones that you can take in your own backyard.

Hi, friends! Things have been quiet around here this week for a few reasons. I was feeling a bit blogged out and needed a lil' break. And then yesterday, I RESIGNED FROM MY JOB! I've been planning on leaving, but Mark and I agreed the best thing would be for me to get a part-time job first, and the rest of my time would be focused on the shop. I've been on a few interviews but haven't had any offers yet, and then yesterday.....it's a long story, but suffice it to say....it was just time. So...

You're looking at a self-employed vintage seller!!!

I'd like to think I'll be sitting around the house looking like this most days.....but I'll probably be in comfy pants 75% of the time. Kidding, kind of. I'll still be getting dressed and blogging daily!

I gave two weeks notice, so I'll be wrapping things up there, and next Thursday I leave for the Texas Style Conference. That being said, things are going to be a little sporadic around these parts. But I do have some great guest bloggers lined up while I'm away!

Last night I had a fabulous time with some fellow Chicago bloggers, who are quickly becoming some of my favorite gal pals. The impetus was a fancy fashion party at Cynthia Rowley (thanks for the invite, Amy!). We sipped some champagne, gnoshed on chocolates and did some great people watching.

We stayed for a bit, then high tailed it across the street for even more champagne and indulgent consumption to celebrate Tabitha's upcoming birthday (it's tomorrow!). I didn't get a whole lot of photos at the event, but I did take pictures of our meal.....yes, this says a lot about my priorities. I filled up on champagne and a ~~healthy~~ high calorie meal, accompanied by many laughs and much fun. A perfect evening!

How long have you been blogging?

This blog is around 9 months old, although I did blog with a friend for about a year and a half before starting Leia's Delights.

Are there many Bangladeshi fashion bloggers or a blogging community?

Not that I'm aware of! I've come across a few expat Bangladeshis who have fashion blogs, but I haven't found a fashion blogger community within Bangladesh.

What is unique about Bangladeshi fashion?
The most amazing aspect of Bangladeshi fashion is the bright colors and quirky color combinations! Bangladeshi ladies aren't afraid to take risks with patterns, colors, prints, etc. - they make bold statements which I just love!

Three favorite items in your wardrobe?
Ooh, this is such a tough question. I have a high-waisted black skirt that goes with almost everything in my closet and is the perfect girly, flowy shape (you can sort of see it here). I also love this salwar kameez - it's so figure-flattering and I just love pastels! Lastly, I adore this bright floral See By Chloé skirt I scored for £1 on The Outnet.

What’s currently on your wish list to buy?
Since I love high-waisted skirts and trousers, I've got 'crop tops' on my wish lists - preferably in lots of different colors and patterns!

You know my love of vintage clothing, so I have to ask - are there vintage clothing shops in Bangladesh?
Sadly, no: the country itself is barely 40 years old! However, since Bangladesh is home to several garments factories, there are markets where you can find surplus items and rejects from the factories. The biggest market is called Bongo Bazaar - it's all indoors, with several stalls set up by vendors - and it's an absolute goldmine if you have the patience to dig through piles and piles of clothing!

If someone were to travel to Bangladesh, what is one item they should buy to incorporate into their wardrobe?
There are two things to remember before traveling to Bangladesh. (1) It's hot and (2) while it is more modern than other Muslim-dominated countries (i.e. women don't wear hijabs or burkhas), it's important to take modesty into account, so don't bring too many cleavage-baring tops or mini-skirts! If you were to bring one item, I would say pack a lightweight scarf - it's easy to throw on like a shawl or dupatta and makes most tops more modest.

What would you like bloggers around the world to know about Bangladeshi fashion?
The majority of women here wear a sari on a daily basis, which is a long piece of fabric draped around the body. It's a very versatile type of garment - not only can you find them in a myriad of different fabrics, prints, and colors, but they can be dressed down for the day and dressed up for evening-wear.

I don't often rave about specific products, but I can't help myself. Last month Sarah from Raving Fashionista posted about theit bag - a fashionable camera bag/purse. They were sold out when she posted about them, so I put myself on the waiting list, all the while thinking the price tag wasn't worth it.

In the mean time, I purchased a quilted purse off of ebay and a small padded camera case, thinking I could DIY it for much cheaper. Well, the ebay purse was flimsy/ looked cheap, and the camera case wouldn't fit inside. None of my other bags could accommodate it plus the items I tote around every day.

After a lot of humming and hawing, I got the email that there was a limited number of bags available to waitlisters, and went ahead and bought it. At $160 + $25 shipping (from Canada), it is by far the most expensive purse I've ever purchased. That being said, I am utterly smitten! When I pulled it out of the box, I thought it looked small. But once I set everything up inside, it's actually quite roomy! The padded inserts that protect the camera and lenses are customizable, so you can move them around as needed. In addition to my camera and one extra lens, I can still fit in my day planner (cuz I'm old school like that), make up bag (because I'm vain like that), wallet, keys, phone, etc with room left. They quality is great even though it isn't leather; it definitely feels like a high-end bag. It's pretty darn cute, and I'm super picky about my purses!

If you're in the market for a fashionable camera bag, I would recommend theit.

I wanted to write a lil' bit about sponsors and my relationship with them. As you can see, I have a few listed on the side. But, you should know - only one of them is an actual paying sponsor.

While I am thrilled, astonished and giddy that anyone reads my blog at all (!!!), it's not generating any kind of traffic that I feel justifies me actively seeking out paying sponsors. But, I reached out to a few awesome ladies I know/like/respect asking if they'd like to place an ad free of charge, because being an Etsy shop owner myself, I know some exposure is better than none. Every little bit counts. I may not be able to promise a lot of return, but I want them to succeed, and this is a small way I can help.

The exception is Mr & Mrs. Digz, which is a local brick and mortar shop who reached out and offered to pay a little for an ad. I really like the shop, know a little bit about their story, and have a friend who works there - so I felt comfortable accepting a minimal payment in exchange. It's a great store that just opened, and they sell local handmade items and have some vintage on consignment. If you're in Chicago, I genuinely think you should check them out!

There generally isn't much transparency on blogs and their relationships with sponsors, but I feel you should all know the sitch around these parts!

On Thursday, Tabitha and I enjoyed a most indulgent, scrumptious dinner at Chez Blogger: home of the lovely Clare and Emily. As soon as I walked in, my stole was whisked off my shoulders and passed around the kitchen.

This week brought some lovely weather to Chicago! It was a great chance for the mountains of snow to melt, and allowed me to pull out a lighter coat. As much as I love winter, it was nice not being weighed down by a heavy coat, layers of clothing and bulky knits.

Making Grandpa (and Zahi Hawass) Proud

Something about the golden threading, pattern, bright colors and stiff material of this skirt reminds me of an ancient Egyptian textile.

Growing up, I was terrified of mummies. Absolutely t e r r i f i e d. It started with an innocent trip to the Field Museum when I was four. We had family visiting, so my grandfather took my out of town cousins and I to the museum, thinking it would be a fun, educational day for all. Sorry, Gramps....little Lisa had other plans!

All was well until we hit the mummy display, where there is a partially unwrapped mummy on view. Pretty creepy for an easily spooked, nightmare-prone four year old such as myself. Apparently staring death in the face was a bit too much for me, who lost it. As in, burst into an hysterical screaming, crying, total freak out fit and could not be calmed. Needless to say, our museum visit came to an abrupt end, and my poor grandfather had to escort a group of traumatized children home. The simple mention of the word mummy sent my heart racing during most of my youth.

Fast forward about 25 years: here I am, working in an art museum. I don't often get to see what's in storage - it's not like I'm tripping over Monets and Van Goghs in the hallway. No mummies here, right?! WRONG. We do, in fact, have a few in our collection. But I never gave it much thought.

One day at work, I get a call from the head of the department that houses our Egyptian collection. She wants to know if I can take on some extra work researching some uncatalogued items. Ancient Egyptian artifacts, to be specific. Oh - and, did I want to view one of the mummies that had been on long term loan and was just returned?

Mummy in a small room, close up? With no glass separating us? The real deal, all up in my face?! Conflicted as I was, I had to say yes. A golden opportunity to face my fears - and seriously - when else would I have a chance like this?

Believe it or not, the experience was pretty painless. The lady mummy was still swaddled in her original wrappings, so there was nothing unsightly exposed. I did, however, stand on a ladder over it, with a gigantic, bright light shining on it to get a good view. Luckily all went well, even with the probability of clumsy me losing my balance and crashing down onto a 3,000 year old woman.

Pretty sure my grandpa would be proud!

Outfit 15 of 30 - this marks my halfway point through the 30x30 challenge*! I've now made it farther than last time (when I made it to 12). This time around, I'm FINISHING this! One of the changes I made that seems to be aiding more success is, I kept all of my 30 items hanging together in my closet, so I'm not even tempted to rummage through the rest of my garments.

This outfit won't be going down in fashion history, but the silhouette is a fav of mine: fitted top with puffed sleeves, flared skirt, boots. Simple, but me.

Yesterday was my five year anniversary at my job - yep, Valentines Day.

Five years ago, the business I worked for (a spa) closed unexpectedly. It hit hard because I was really close to the people I worked with, and genuinely loved the work. After the spa closed, I was able to snatch up a temp job while I looked for a permanent position. While all of this was going on, I was living with a boyfriend and though I didn't realize it at the time, in a very destructive relationship.

Over the holidays that year, that boyfriend and I flew out to visit his family, and the day after we got there, he dumped me. I was pretty stunned, my life was a mess: working a temporary job, getting kicked out of my apartment (the dude was keeping our place....and I later found out, moving a new lady in), and totally heartbroken.

After lots of tears, cocktails, loosing a few pounds and gaining some gray hairs, I ended up landing a job and an apartment! I quit the temp job, had my last day on a Friday, moved all of my stuff into my new place over the weekend and started my new gig that Monday: Valentines Day. It was a TOTAL do over, a chance to hit reset and start fresh.

So while things aren't so great on the job front at the moment and I am craving change, I'm thrilled with the path my life is on! These last few years have been amazing, and flown by faster than I could ever imagine. I was 23 when all this happened, it seems as though I blinked and landed at 28. I owe a lot of that to my other half, whom I never would have met if it weren't for my job. Five years later, I'm finding my niche, realizing what my strengths, weaknesses and talents are, and building a life I love.

That's what I spent my Valentines Day reflecting on. :)

We'd never been to this restaurant before, but were hungry and decided to stop.

Day 9 of 30*

Hello my friends! This week seems to be draaaaaaging on, and I feel so behind in posting, so I'm playing a little catch up here. Day 8* (or Monday) didn't get photographed, but I'll make up for it!

Wanna know what the highlight of my week has been? Discovering almond butter. I am a VERY picky eater. My poor parents had such a hard time with me growing up, I'm sure. But I've gotten better about it as I've gotten older. I'm trying to be very conscious about what I put in my body right now to try and get a little healthier.

The last few weeks I have been craving peanut butter like crazy for some reason. For a change of pace (with a much lower sugar content), I picked up some almond butter to try. Wild stuff for a person like me! It's not that much different, and I've gone through half a jar already - I love it!

*Since I'm doing the 30 for 30 challenge, I'm a bit behind on posts since there are so many - I wore this over the weekend.*

I love when my outfits end up with more vintage than new items. Often I don't talk about how I acquire pieces, but I'm making an effort to do so, since buying vintage isn't always going to the store and seeing one of everything in a range of sizes. With vintage, each piece is unique and one of a kind, and hunting them down is half the fun!

This skirt (the obvious star of the show) I found on Etsy while scouring the web for a gold dress or skirt to wear for the holidays. When I came across it in this shop, I had to have it! Not only are the gold and bright colors wonderful, the texture is amazing.

My necklace was a gift from Mark's mom. Last year, before I had opened the shop, we were visiting with his parents and she asked if I liked old jewelry. I may have choked with excitement when she asked....do I ever! At the time I was just starting to get things set up to open up, and when I told her about my new venture, she gave me a box or two of some great stuff! Obviously, I kept my most favorite things! This necklace was among them. I had it listed for months, all the while secretly hoping it wouldn't sell. Finally, I realized I couldn't part with it!

The ring has a similar story - my stepmom's mom (Step-grandma? I've known her forever so she definitely feels like a grandma. Bonus grandma!) gave me a TON of jewelry to keep or sell. This ring was amongst that group.

And the shoes....thrifted.

Do you know what's sad? Between last Monday and today, I've left the house only once (plus dog walks!). The snow has us totally packed in still: the car has been rendered useless until some of this stuff melts. Running errands? A thing of the past. Who needs groceries? Pffft.

We walked a gazillion orders for the shop to the post office tonight, after I almost got the car (that has 4 wheel drive) stuck in the snow. So to work and home it will be for me until some of the snow melts. But, seeing as it's supposed to be like, -12 tomorrow....don't think it's gonna happen any time soon. But, no matter what, I still heart winter!

One day, I'll have a blog with content not influenced by the weather.

Friday was supposed to be back to work day, but I woke up in the middle of the night with FOOD POISONING. I thought it was the dreaded flu at first, but I felt better by the end of the day, so I can only deduce it was something I ate. I'd felt so gross all day, when I finally did get dressed, a tutu inspired skirt was really all that could cure my woes.

I absolutely love the bright colors and how fun it is, but refuse to pay $18 for nail polish. When I came across some glitter at the store, I knew I could create the same effect with stuff at home! Here's what I did:

Thursday was yet another snow day off of work! Temperatures have dropped low - REAL low. So no outdoor adventures today. My office is stuffed to the gills with vintage wares that need to be listed (as you can see it's creeping into my photo!), so I spent as much time as possible listing some new goods in the shop.

Scenes from a Snow Day!

Can't see it, but scouts honor I'm wearing 30x30 items: my fox print sweater dress with leggings and snow boots. With waist high snow, a dress wasn't exactly an option.

Here's what the last 24 hours have looked like:

50-60 mile an hour winds, and snow coming down at 3-4 inches an hour. Could barely see across the street! I learned another new meteorological term: snowicane (hurricane conditions + snow = snowicane). Thanks, Weather Channel!

Around midnight, we had to take the dog for one last bathroom outing. Mark had to dig a path so we could make it out! Also....it should be noted: my boyfriend's first picture on the blog is in his pajamas.

About a foot of snow, untouched. The neighborhood was so serene and quiet....except for the thunder, lighting and high speed winds.

Next morning: Atlas was not very interested in going out! Despite shoveling a foot of snow just before bed, there was double the amount when we woke up.

Yes, you are seeing things correctly - I'm wearing the same skirt as the day before. Judge away....I would if I were you! It's not like me to wear the same thing two days in a row, but as I was getting dressed this morning, it was all I wanted to wear! So, why not?

These were taken just as the snow was starting to get serious. Mark got sent home early (yay!) so we went out for lunch, and he snapped these for me before we headed inside to hunker down for the next 24-48 hours. The blizzard has been going strong for hours now. Have you heard of thundersnow before? I hadn't! Thunder, lightning, wind like I have rarely seen....and snow. SNOWMUCHSNOW. The gusts are so strong our building has literally been swaying and shaking. It's been a crazy experience - and the news just told us "the worst is yet to come"! I'll have lots of snow pics and maybe a video tomorrow.

SNOWPOCALYPSE! It's COMING!!!!!!! Chicago gets its fair share of snow, but the Midwest is expecting an unusual amount, something akin to the 1967 snowstorm, which looked like this:

During that storm, my grandmother had to drag my uncle (who was a toddler) to the emergency room on a sled when he fell and sliced his head open. Let's hope for no emergencies like that, because we don't have a sled! I took today and Wednesday off to stay home and enjoy (yes - ENJOY! I love snow!) the storm from the comfort of my living room with the pooch.

Disguised as a style blog, From Suns To Moons is my opportunity to write creatively for an audience, which I've always wanted to do. I have a passion for fashion but am not an expert - I like to think I make up for this with my "wit," like the deluded Mary Bennet.

How long have you been blogging?

Since August of 2010.

Are there many Canadian fashion bloggers or a blogging community in Vancouver?

I don't know if I'd say "many," but there are definitely some talented ladies out here. Jentine of My Edit is someone I look up to both in terms of personal style and writing. If there is a blogging community in Vancouver, then I don't know anything about it. Why, what have you heard?

What is unique about Canadian fashion?

It relies so much on the weather. This is true of any country, of course, but I feel like long, snow-filled winters give Canadians fewer style options. Practicality, warmth, and comfort trump everything else when getting dressed in the morning.

Three favorite items in your wardrobe?

My black wellies, navy winter coat, and Rubik's cube skirt - basic necessities for precipitation, cold, and general boredom, respectively.

What’s currently on your wishlist to buy?

A killer birthday gift for my little sister. I'm taking suggestions.

You know my love of vintage clothing, so I have to ask - are there vintage clothing shops in Vancouver?

Yes, quite a few that carry beautiful frocks at heart-stopping prices! I'm always amazed at the prices other bloggers list for their vintage finds, because they sound too good to be true.

If someone were to travel to Vancouver, what is one item they should buy to incorporate into their wardrobe?

It's a toss-up between a classic trench coat and a solid pair of rain boots. The torso, however, gets more umbrella coverage than the feet, so I would invest in some flattering wellies. And when you return to your non-rainy hometown, I guess you can take up gardening to get more mileage out of those babies.

What would you like international bloggers to know about Canadian fashion? That it's very liberal, much like the country. You can wear whatever you want, there's no fashion police. Could you imagine Mounties lecturing anyone on style?

Wednesday I stopped at a thrift store on a whim - SO glad I did. I've been hunting for the perfect pussybow blouse (am I the only person creeped out by that term, btw?) for months and months with no luck. Then, whaddyaknow?! I found THREE, all priced at $2.80. Some days you just strike gold!

As much as I love winter (I really do!), the winter sartorial sads have hit me. But my favorite new vintage blouse paired with my very favorite map skirt pulled me out of my slump yesterday!

Remember when I mentioned before that I was really excited about 2011? Well, I can finally share some of why with you!

I am about to take the shop (almost) full time! YES! I am nearly busting with excitement! Soon I'll be a stay at home dog-mom selling vintage! I'm still working my full time job, and will, until I secure a part-time position somewhere. Knowing myself, if I stay home 100% of the time and don't have any human interaction (or some steady cash) coming in, I will drive myself crazy. In the meantime, I'm working on getting this little home business properly set up.

As you all are probably aware, jobs are few and far between these days. So I'm casting my net far and wide - if you know of anything a few hours or days a week in the Chicago area, let me know!

This has been my plan for a while, and was going to work towards it this year, but there's no time like the present, right? If you want to learn more about what lead me to this decision, head over to Money Smart Fashion! The stylish saver, Grace, is starting a great feature on her blog about blogging and finances. I couldn't answer her great interview questions without disclosing what's up. Plus, this is a secret too good to keep for long! :)

Great Minds Style Alike!

When I wore this dress a few weeks back, the oh-so-stylish and sweet Alessandra of Mode Moods emailed me to say she had the same dress! So.....the obvious thing for a couple of blogger friends to do was wear them on the same day, right? Alessandra is all the way in Milan, so its kind of fun to think someone on the other side of the world is wearing the same dress at the same time! Be sure to check out how she wore it!

I steamed this dress before I got dressed, but from my winter coat and bundling up, it was wrinkled by the time I got to work. The joys of linen.

Seeing as Alessandra and I both adore our canine children (her little pup, Tobia makes a regular appearance on her blog as well!), it only seemed right for Atlas to get a little air time today.

Those of you who followed me through the last 30 for 30 challenge remember how I dropped out halfway through. I swore I would never do it again.....yet here I am, all signed up again! Last time, the biggest lesson I came away with was that I am an emotional dresser. Of course weather and occasion have some influence, but otherwise my mood dominates what I wear daily. So, in November when my other half was away for an extended time, I was feeling pretty down. Not being able to reach for whatever I wanted in my closet was driving me absolutely. freaking. crazy. Sad, but true.

This time, I have no excuse to fail....especially since just as this 30 for 30 comes to an end, I'm headed to Austin for the Texas Style Council Conference! Seeing as Kendi is speaking at the conference, I cannot possibly show my face in her presence having failed at her challenge not once, but twice!

Anyone else going to be in Austin? I can't wait to mingle with new and old faces!!!

Mark told me I looked like a tomboy today. Yes, in our household, I'm the bigger football fan! As much as I love all things frilly and feminine, when you grow up around serious Chicago Bears fans, it's hard not to let some of that team spirit rub off on you. Even so - I never, ever wear fan gear.

However, today was a very important game, and I broke some of my self imposed fashion rules. Admittedly, I tried to feminize this look as best I could - but all attempts failed. So jersey + jeans + boots = Sunday attire!

Have you found a way to support your favorite team in a fashionable way?

Well, it was a disappointing game to say the least. Sometimes the only thing that can cheer up a household of sad fans is a homemade pizza:

I spent a good portion of my day in the emergency room today! Blah!

For some reason, NO ONE in Chicago seems to shovel or salt their sidewalks. Everything seems to be covered in a sheet of ice at the moment. While walking to the train yesterday, as we turned a corner Mark told me,"Be careful, its really ice here..." and before he finished his sentence I had already hit the ground.

No biggie...I'm used to falling. But by the time I got to work, my hand was swollen and pretty painful. I gave it some time, but it didn't seem to get any better, so fearing it was broken, decided to go get it checked out. Thankfully, Mark and I work across the street from each other, so he was able to meet me fast and accompany me on a romantic morning date to the ER.

Turns out it's just a sprain - yay! The swelling has already gone down and I'm feeling better already. Moral of the story? Salt your walkways, people!!! Not sure if you noticed, but it's WINTER out there.

One note about this outfit - Mark brought me back this beautiful vintage horse pendent from Qatar! It came without a chain, so I added it to this modern necklace with a smaller horse pendant on it. Vintage + animal + jewelry = LOVE!

Fair Isle: Not Just for Sweaters!

Like many folks, I had Monday off for the MLK holiday. I've found that if I stay in comfy clothes all day, nothing gets done. My to-do list included lots of laundry and housework, so being lazy wasn't an option!

I put on a dress but kept it casual with these warm sweater boots. My dad gave them to me for Christmas (along with some other great gifts..including my 50mm lens!). My step mom assured me he picked them out all by himself. Not bad, Pops - I love them! They're fleece lined and have a rubber sole, so even though they're mostly a slipper boot, I can still wear them outside if need be. Perfect for a snowy day like today!

Leggings Are NOT Pants

Let's talk about leggings.

What comes to mind when you hear that word? Stretchy, form-fitting fabric with an elastic waist that cover your legs. They're called leggings and not pants because, well - THEY AREN'T PANTS. More often than not, pants have buttons, seams, zippers, pockets, etc. There is a significant difference and it should be respected.

Leggings, when worn as pants, reveal more than anyone cares to see - no matter what size you are. Thick or thin, they are not appropriate. I recently witnessed leggings + short top + blazer = at work. Highly inappropriate unless you work the streets or with a pole.

When wearing leggings in public, it is imperative to be sure you aren't revealing too much. Your bottom should be well covered, and (ahem)....let's leave camels and their toes in the zoos and deserts of the world. Plus, when leggings hug curves they tend to become slightly transparent, revealing what's underneath in a most unfortunate light.

This oversized sweater dress can be paired with tights or leggings, as it comes just a few inches above the knees - it's the same length as many other dresses that I have and would wear tights with. If it were any shorter, we'd be approaching dangerous territory.

So please - keep in mind when getting dressed that it's better to leave a little something to the imagination.

Pianosaurus is run by the very sweet Marjie. We've had many email and twitter exchanges and, like myself, she is an avid traveler and animal lover. Fun fact: one day Marjie wants to open up an animal shelter in Asia = LOVE! Right now, she's a student saving to go to Kenya and work with children living in garbage slums this summer.

So...buying vintage from Pianosaurus benefits children in Africa. Can't feel bad about that! In fact, you should feel bad if you DON'T buy something!

Caught in the Act

Tonight, I would like to invite you all on a photographic journey.

It's been snowing all day, and it's actually warm enough for me to be outside long enough to take photos without loosing any appendages. I was so excited to take some photos in the snow!

Above, I'm standing in our parking spot behind our building. Mark was out with the car, so I thought I'd try and take advantage of the space to capture the partially burned garage behind me (our neighborhood is lovely...coughghettocough).

Insert thought bubble here:

"Sweet. These pics are going to be awesome."

"Crap...I can hear someone shoveling in the yard. How do I explain myself? Hmm...I'll try to move to where they can't see me....."

I move the tripod behind the car in the spot next to ours, which belongs to a neighbor.

"I'm so smart! No one will see me over here!"

Hit the self timer button and dash in front of the camera.....

WIPE OUT.

MUST.FINISH.

And just as the timer was going off for this photo, who emerges? None other than my neighbor who's car my tripod was blocking in. We had a very awkward exchange as I tried to pretend that he didn't just catch me taking photos of myself in the alley. But clearly me being out at night in the cold, with no coat and a camera, in the alley...curiosity got the best of him. He asked what I was doing, and I tried to explain what a fashion blog was...but failed miserably.

Trying to freshen things up here at Archives today. Some changes to the layout...whatcha think?

Mark has been bugging me about the load time of the site. He says my photos are too large and he doesn't have the patience to wait for it to load.

I don't seem to have a problem...but if you guys are having issues, I want to know! The photos I posted here are lower quality than I usually use (a size advised by Mark), but I want to know if you all think they look awful, or even noticed a difference. Below is a SUPER quick survey...it would be a big help if you would take a second to fill it out!

Grandpa's Mug

Last night I woke up with a start - there was a strong odor to the air, and I couldn't place it. My first thought was that there was a fire in the building. I got up and checked the house; looked out the windows, peeked out into the hallway....sniff, sniff. The smell was there - but I couldn't place what it was or where it was coming from. Nervously, I returned to bed and laid awake for what seemed like hours.

It got me thinking - if there was a fire, what would we do? What do you grab? We're on the top floor of our building, so there wouldn't be several trips in and out - it would be a one shot deal - grab what you can in one go.

As I was making breakfast this morning and pulled out my favorite coffee cup, I realized that it was on my list. My grandparents had this set of mugs for as long as I can remember. My family drank out of them for years at birthday parties, dinners, gatherings and for general everyday use. I spent a lot of time in their house growing up, and moved in when my grandfather got sick when I was 20. He passed away shortly after, but I stayed with my grandmother for two years.

When I finally moved out, I grabbed a mug from the cabinet. Each time I sip from it, wash it, or place it back in the cabinet, I think of him sitting at the kitchen table, night after night, playing cards with his evening cup of coffee.
